Why We Emphasize Pet Wellness Care
Your pet’s health is always changing. Since they age much more quickly than we do, it’s important to keep an eye on their health so any developing problems can be caught early and treated quickly and effectively. At Beaver Brook Animal Hospital, we recommend annual visits for young pets and semi-annual visits for cats and dogs over 7 years old to ensure that they’re healthy and aging well.
Help your pet maintain their optimal health and well-being throughout every life-stage. Schedule a wellness visit today.
Physical Exams & Age-Appropriate Lab Work
At every pet wellness care visit, we’ll perform a thorough physical exam checking for any abnormalities such as lumps or bumps, hair loss, stiff or painful joints, irregular heartbeats, abnormal lung sounds, etc. A complete exam will include:
- Eyes, ears, and nose
- Skin and coat condition
- Heart and lungs
- Oral health
- Legs, hips, joints, and spine
- Abdomen
- Weight and body condition score*
*If your pet is overweight, we offer nutritional consultations with one of our certified technicians who can work with you to develop a healthy weight-loss plan.
Despite our thoroughness, a physical exam alone is not enough. In addition, we’ll also perform age-appropriate blood work and lab testing which may include:
- Complete blood count
- Blood chemistry panels (useful for checking the health of individual organs)
- Heartworm test
- Fecal exam (for intestinal parasites)
- Urinalysis (to test kidney health)

Common Problems in Our Area: Allergies & Ticks
In Wethersfield and the greater New England area, two of our biggest issues are allergies and ticks. Allergies can affect your pet either year-round or seasonally, depending on the allergen that causes the reaction. Our animal hospital has the experience to diagnose allergies as well as manage them to give your pet lasting relief. If you think your pet is suffering from allergies, contact us today at (860) 757-3346.
Ticks also have “seasons,” and are most active from March to mid-May and from mid-August to November; however, they can be active all year long. In our area, Lyme disease is a serious threat to our pets, which is why we recommend consistent, year-long parasite prevention. We’re also able to perform a tick-borne disease screening that tests for some of the most common tick-borne illnesses. Talk to your veterinarian about parasite prevention options and screening tests if needed.
