Have You Made Disaster Preparations for Your Pets?

During a natural disaster, pets face the same vulnerabilities that we do. Severe weather can take out our electricity, stop water from running through our faucets, and even cause damage to our homes. Pets need food, water, and shelter, like every member of your family, and they rely on you to provide those needs. Pets are also now legally included in the disaster preparations at the federal, state, and local government levels through the Pet Evacuation, Transportation Standards Act that went into effect in 2006. This means that more resources are allocated to rescuing and sheltering pets during an emergency. Still, your pet's first line of defense against disaster is you! To help you get started on your pet’s disaster plan, we’ve gathered some tips.

Tips for Your Pet’s Disaster Plan

If It's Not Safe for You...

...it's not safe for them! Never leave your pet at home if an evacuation has been issued. This can put your pet in severe danger including physical injury, dehydration, starvation, and becoming lost.

Prepare for the Storm

If you decide to weather out the storm, make sure your pet’s food, medication, and water are all available in a safe area of your home. It also helps to familiarize your pet with your storm shelter well before you have to use it!

Microchip Your Pet

While collars have your name and number on them, they can fall off, become damaged, or even be removed. A microchip is a fail-safe ID that contains your contact information should your pet become lost during a disaster.

Finding Shelter

Find boarding facilities in safe zones or along your evacuation route for you to take your pet to in the event the shelter you’re staying at doesn’t accept pets.

Keep Records

Be sure to have their vaccination and medical records with you in case you need to present these to a shelter in order for your pet to be accepted.

Pet Friendly Hotels

Call hotels along your evacuation route to see if they allow pets. You can search for pet-friendly hotels at petswelcome.com.

A Guide to Your Pet’s Emergency Kit

A pet emergency kit should include all of the essentials your pet could need during an evacuation. Here are some items to consider:

  • Sturdy leash, harness or carrier to transport your pet and keep them from escaping
  • Pet first aid kit (bandage rolls, tape, scissors, antibiotic ointment, isopropyl alcohol, parasite prevention, latex gloves, etc.)
  • Medical records stored in a waterproof container
  • Any medications your pet is on (a two-week supply is a good amount)
  • A portable litter box for cats
  • Paper towels and disposable garbage bags for clean up
  • Food and water (at least 7 days’ worth)
  • Information about feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets
  • Pet bedding and select toys, if you can easily take them to help reduce your pet’s stress
